Origin and Diffusion

The Massese (or Fornese, di Forno, Versilia) is an Italian breed at prevailing attitude to the production of milk. Native breed from Massa (Toscana), in the Valle del Forno (Apuane, provincia di massa Carrara). Currently it is bred mainly in Toscana, Emilia and Liguria. It 's very strange, especially for the coat color that is not found in any other breed Italian.

The wool, little or not appreciated, can not be dyed.

Morphological and Breeding Characteristics

  • Size: medium
  • Testa: in the male, well developed flattened profile; lighter in females; slight depression between forehead and nose. Horns: in males serrated and spiral open; read and slender in females.
  • Trunk: long, sturdy skeleton, straight line-lumbar spine. Wide and long Chest, long croup sloping rear, belly capable, full hips, breast developed, sturdy black base.
  • Skin: black, fine. Palate black as the natural openings.
  • Average height at the withers: Rams cm 85, Ewes cm77
  • Weigh: Rams 90 Kg, Ewes 70 Kg

Dark gray or brown Fleece, black apical part, open or semi-open; discovered: head, abdomen and limbs.

Average production of Milk (without feeding): Primiparous lt 120, Pluriparous lt150 -(content of fat 6.2%, 5.3% protein).

Average production of meat: Rams Kg 65, Ewes Kg 45
